Interview: Dimitris Mountakis, Chamber of Chania - Sustainable development of Balos and Akamas

Mr. Dimitris Mountakis, member of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Chania, spoke to TravelDailyNews Greece & Cyprus and presented the Interreg Greece-Cyprus Cross-Costal-Net program "Development of a cross-border network to promote sustainable coastal tourism".

Mr. Dimitris Mountakis, a member of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Chania, presented to TravelDailyNews Greece & Cyprus the Interreg Greece Cyprus Cross-Costal-Net program "Development of a cross-border network for the promotion of sustainable coastal tourism" which examines the areas of Balos beach in Chania and the Akamas acropolis located in Paphos on the northwestern tip of Cyprus. Both areas are Natura 2000 and have increased tourist flows. Individual objectives of the program are:

  • Promotion of networking between the entities involved in tourism and the environment of the P.E. Chania and Paphos District
  • Protection and promotion of the natural wealth and biodiversity of sensitive Natura 2000 coastal areas of Chania and Paphos District
  • Promotion of new alternative tourist destinations around the aforementioned Natura 2000 coastal areas
  • Use of ICT applications to promote networking between stakeholders and promote new 'green' tourism packages/destinations
  • Promotion of pro-environmental tourism and business activities
  • Extension of the tourist season
  • Awareness of residents and visitors
  • Strengthening the management capacity of local communities in matters of protection and promotion of natural resources
